Escaping to Tulum: Sun, Style, and Serenity

My lastest trip took me to Tulum, Mexico—a place I’d surprisingly never visited. With New York City in the grips of winter, we were craving sun, sand, and a little escape. So when New Year’s Eve rolled around, we booked an incredibly easy flight south.

Since it was our first time, we weren’t sure where to stay, but after a bit of research, we landed on the penthouse suite at Sana Tulum. To my delight, it exceeded every expectation. The beach club struck the perfect balance between lively energy and serene relaxation, perfect for tanning or just sipping cocktails by the water. Our suite came with a private pool, a dreamy perk, and while the hotel itself didn’t have an overwhelming number of amenities, its location in South Tulum meant we had endless spots to explore.

Tulum’s culinary scene left a lasting impression. We started at NU, a Michelin-starred gem. From the moment I arrived—arms full of shopping bags—they handed me a personal purse hook and made me feel completely at ease. Each course was presented beautifully, with detailed explanations of flavors, and the food… absolutely unforgettable. Next, we visited The Wild, another Michelin-starred hotspot, where we indulged in a nine-course tasting paired with wine. Our server, Sebastian, was knowledgeable, charming, and passionate about the menu, offering fascinating insights into each dish’s traditions. We also discovered a nearby restaurant that served the best mole I’ve ever tasted—Tulum truly is a food lover’s paradise.

Shopping in Tulum was just as inspiring. Wandering the streets, we found countless charming boutiques. Mary Jane stood out with its silk dresses and cashmere shawls—I left with a camel cashmere shawl that’s effortlessly chic. I even promised the owner a photo once I styled it at home. We also stumbled upon Ismeralda, an Italian-owned boutique with incredible resort-ready pieces. Both my boyfriend and I found versatile staples perfect for future summer escapes.

For the ultimate wellness experience, we discovered Yaan Healing Sanctuary, right by our hotel. We indulged in the 400 Mayan ritual, which included a limpia, body scrub, four-hand massage, a 30-minute bath, and an hour in the bathhouse. It was transformative, serene, and utterly rejuvenating—a must-visit for anyone seeking a true escape.

Tulum exceeded every expectation: perfect weather, unforgettable meals, boutique treasures, and a wellness experience that lingers long after you leave. I can’t wait to return.
